2019/20 Jazz Band Audition Information

Below contains information regarding Jazz Band auditions for the 2019/20 school year. The philosophy of WHS Jazz is that there is a place for students of all skill levels within our jazz program. Auditions are required for placement into a WHS Jazz Ensemble. The number of jazz ensembles will be determined by instrumentation and the number of students auditioning. Auditions will be held the week of November 18th immediately after school. Students will have an opportunity to sign up for audition times in advance. A final list of audition times will be made available in the Band Hall the week of 11/11.

AUDITION DATES
All Saxes - Tuesday November 19th
All Brass - Wednesday November 20th
All Rhythm Section: Thursday November 21st

Results will be posted by Wednesday, November 27th. First rehearsals will be the week of December 16th.
Winds (Saxes, Trumpet, and Trombone):
1. Scales- Directors will select 2 from the scale sheet at the audition.

2. Jazz excerpt GREAT LOVE  Measures 1-32, with the recorded accompaniment track.

3. Students auditioning must play 2 choruses of improvised F Blues over the recorded track.

4. Sight Reading
Piano, Guitar, Bass:
1. Scales- Directors will select 2 from the scale sheet at the audition.

2. Jazz excerpt GREAT LOVE  Measures 1-32 with the recorded accompaniment track. Play once through solo as written. Additional points earned if you can play through a second time using appropriate comping different from the one written out.

3. Students auditioning must play 2 choruses of improvised F Blues over the recorded track.

4. Sight Reading
Drums:
1. Chart Excerpts- Perform the excerpts demonstrating appropriate groove/style. Make sure to "set up" ensemble figures as indicated. Reference recordings are provided for practice only. Students will perform without accompaniment in the audition.
